Brits will be flocking to the internet this Christmas to buy gifts for their family and friends, research has revealed.

The Interactive Media and Retail Group (IMRG) predicted that Christmas shoppers will spend a staggering £7bn online.

According to the IMRG, 25 million shoppers will be buying their Christmas presents from the comfort of their homes and will spend about £4m online every hour in the run-up to Christmas.

This is an increase of 40 per cent compared to the same period last year, where £5bn was spent online, the IMRG reported.

James Roper, CEO of IMRG, said: "The internet has become the most reliable way to shop. With real-time product availability becoming the norm at the leading e-retailers, consumers can tick off their shopping lists with certainty, rather than pinning their hopes on pounding the pavements."
