An increasing number of people are turning to Google to help them find their way around the net, according to new figures.

Google accounted for 78 per cent of all UK searches last month, a nine percent increase over the previous year, while Yahoo took second place with just 7.7 per cent, according to web traffic monitoring company Hitwise.

Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask collectively accounted for 96.6 per cent of all UK internet searches last month.

“Consumers are increasingly using search engines to navigate the web, Google and Yahoo in particular because of the brand name familiarity,” said Heather Hopkins, vice president of research for Hitwise UK.

Hitwise also revealed that travel agents, online shops and banking sites had received the most visits from users coming from search engines in October.
