Music fans will soon be able to download tracks in real time while they are played on digital radio stations.

A new service called Digital Music Downloading (DMD) will let users buy songs instantly as they listen to them on digital radio, media company UBC revealed.

The service will allow listeners to buy seven tracks per week at a price of £1.25 from digital radio stations including Smash Hits and Heart.

According to UBC, the service will be available in London in early 2007 and will go live nationally in May.

DMD’s launch follows the successful trial of the technology in Birmingham with radio station Heart, the company said.

“We know there is a demand for DMD - our trial this summer demonstrated this, and this is digital radio’s killer application,” said Simon Cole, chief executive of UBC Media.
