Nostalgic music fans are logging onto the net to find information about Genesis, George Michael and The Beatles, the latest search engine figures reveal.

According to Hitwise, visits to Genesis’ website increased dramatically in the last few weeks, with ‘Genesis’ the most searched-for term in the Bands and Artist websites category.

Visits to George Michael's site and The Beatles' website also surged over the past weeks, following the release of new albums, Hitwise revealed.

According to the statistics, music fans also rushed to online music stores. Play.com topped Hitwise’s Shopping and Music websites list, while HMV ranked second.

“HMV’s gains so far this year are part of a broader trend of high street retailers gaining online in the run-up to Christmas,” said Heather Hopkins, director of research for Hitwise UK.

“This year, we are witnessing resurgence for high street retailers, who have adapted pricing, customer service and marketing to the reality of the way consumers now shop,” she added.
