The HM Prison Service site has been awarded the Plain English Campaign's prize for the clearest website.

"This can be a very difficult subject for some people, yet the website has a warm and sensitive tone. The design and navigation is clear and simple to use, and it is easy for visitors to find the information they are looking for," said spokesman Ben Beer.

The Plain English Campaign has given out awards in this category every year since 2000. Previous winners include BBC Newsround and the Advice Services Alliance.

The organisation also acknowledged the large number of entrants and high quality of many of the nominated websites.

"Nowadays it is absolutely vital that organisations have clear and accessible websites, especially when they contain a lot of information," said Beer.

The award will be presented at a ceremony in London on 12 December. The Campaign will also be award the 'Golden Bull' booby prize for the year's most baffling gobbledegook.
