Tesco's website is beating rival online supermarket services in terms of performance and availability, according to a study.

Researchers at Keynote Systems found that Tesco's site was the best to use when these factors were taken into consideration. The site was available 99.47 per cent of the time when researchers attempted to access it, just beating Sainsbury's and Asda's websites and well ahead of Ocado.

Ocado's site, however, had the quickest loading times for its pages with an average of 5.2 seconds, with Tesco slightly behind at 5.7 seconds. Sainsbury's pages took an average of 20 seconds to load, with Asda coming in last at a tardy 31 seconds.

According to Keynote Systems, Tesco's performance is likely to win custom from its competitors.

"It seems that some retail sites underestimated the increasing reliance on web commerce and are now falling behind. As a result, some customers are being let down by the companies they are traditionally loyal to, often forcing them to consider a competitor," said Haran Sold, vice president of Keynote Systems.

"Tesco's website has both the performance and availability statistics that make it stand out from its closest competitors. In a competitive market such as this, website performance can be the difference between retaining a customer or losing them to a rival," he continued.
