Yahoo is expected to announce plans to launch a search application specifically designed for mobile phones at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week.

A report in The Wall Street Journal suggests that an announcement is set to be made at the annual technology exhibition, held in Las Vegas.

According to the report, Yahoo is keen not to let rival Google dominate the mobile search market in the same way that it dominates the market for home internet users.

According to figures from market analysts Hitwise, Google was the engine of choice for 78 per cent of searches in the UK last October, while Yahoo was way behind with 7.7 per cent.

Yahoo also plans to address the market directky, without turning to other companies such as mobile handset manufacturers and mobile network operators for help.

Web User will bring you more details of the announcement as soon as they are available.
