Apple has launched a "DVD player for the 21st century" that it says will help users bring iTunes into their living rooms.
Apple has launched a set-top box-type device that it says will help users bring iTunes into their living rooms.
Though rumours about what was going to be launched at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco had centred on the iPhone, many industry watchers had predicted the announcement of this device, which was initially being referred to as the iTV.
The Apple TV contains a 40GB hard drive to accomodate the contents of your iTunes library and connects to your TV and other home entertainment devices. It will connect to wireless networks and is capable of delivering high definition output.
The Apple Remote is part of the package, and this allows users to browse through their stored content from the other side of the room.
“Apple TV is like a DVD player for the 21st century—you connect it to your entertainment system just like a DVD player, but it plays digital content you get from the internet rather than DVDs you get from a physical store.
“Apple TV plays the same iTunes content that users enjoy on their computers and iPods, so now they can even watch part of a movie in their living room, and watch the rest later on their iPod,” said Jobs.
The device is set to launch in February and will cost £199.
