The Government has announced that it is scrapping 551 websites in an effort "to make access to information easier for citizens and businesses". The Cabinet Office announced the news after releasing a progress report on the use of technology in Government. The ‘Transformational Government: enabled by technology’ report has examined the role of 951 websites already and there are plans to look at 374 more by June 2007. Only 26 websites were sure to be kept, as use of Government IT has "reached critical mass". Information of relevance from the scrapped sites would be moved onto the Directgov site, it said. “This report demonstrates how millions of people are benefiting from our use of technology everyday. We are dealing decisively with the proliferation of government websites by getting rid of more than 500. We are ensuring that the quality of our services will not be affected by these changes,” said Pat McFadden, the Minister for Transformational Government. http://www.direct.gov.uk/
