Popular internet-browsing application Firefox has been updated to offer greater protection against security threats.

Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, released version 2.0.0.2 on Friday to fix eight vulnerabilities, two of which were serious enough to have potentially allowed a hacker to take control of your PC. Support for Windows Vista is also improved in the latest release.

Security experts have advised Firefox users to install the update as soon as possible. "It makes sense for all computer users to remain alert about the latest security flaws, and ensure they are running the latest patched version of their chosen internet browser," said Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos.

Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer, is more often the target of malicious hackers, but Firefox has been singled out for attack more and more in recent times.

"Firefox users cannot fool themselves into thinking that security is just a problem for Microsoft products," said Cluley.

"It has been much more common for hackers to target users of Microsoft Internet Explorer than Firefox, but that doesn't mean that Firefox users should stick their heads in the sand," he continued.

Additionally, anyone using Firefox version 1.5 is advised to upgrade as soon as possible as this version will not be supported beyond April.
