A media-streaming device designed to bring iTunes to the living room will not be on sale as early as expected.

The Apple TV, announced at the MacWorld Expo in January this year, was expected to go on sale this month in the UK for around £199. However, it isn't quite ready and will not launch until the middle of March.

"Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected, and we now expect to begin shipments mid-March," Apple said in a statement.

The Apple TV contains a 40GB hard drive to accomodate the contents of your iTunes library and connects to your TV and other home entertainment devices. It is compatible with wireless networks and is capable of delivering high definition output.

“Apple TV is like a DVD player for the 21st century — you connect it to your entertainment system just like a DVD player, but it plays digital content you get from the internet rather than DVDs you get from a physical store," said Apple's Steve Jobs at launch.

The Apple TV device has already received criticism in some quarters as UK consumers are not yet able to download movies through the iTunes store, meaning that there will be little content to watch through the Apple TV when it launches here.
