Tickets for next summer's football tournament, Euro 2008, have gone on sale today.

With more than a million tickets available in all, a third will be directly available from www.uefa.com.

Christian Mutschler, the joint tournament director, said: "Our aim, bearing in mind the relatively small size of the stadiums, was to offer a particularly high proportion of the tickets directly to the fans.

"This proportion will be more than the 75 per cent we had aimed for, when you take into account that some of the sponsors' tickets will also go to the fans via competitions and draws," said Mutschler.

Tickets are not being allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, but instead football fans are being asked to apply online during the month of March. If any matches are over-subscribed, a lottery will be held to determine who gets the tickets.

The tournament is taking place in Austria and Switzerland, with the British nations' teams passages to the finals still far from assured.

England have two crucial away ties against Israel and Andorra before the end of the month and lie third in their group after a costly loss to Croatia. Scotland currently lead their group but still look like underdogs with France, Italy and the Ukraine all vying for a place in Euro 2008.

Wales and the Republic of Ireland both face tough tasks having been drawn in the same qualifying grooup as Germany and the Czech Republic and Northern Ireland have Spain, Sweden and Denmark to contend with.

Tickets can also be bought over the phone on 00 41 44 559 0868.
