The new-look Sky News website has been launched today, boasting more video footage than its predecessor.

The emphasis of the new site is on breaking news stories and is the first move in Sky's strategy to re-energise its online news offering.

The design of the site has been changed with a cleaner, less cluttered interface and is intended to compliment the look of Sky's television news offerings.

“The design changes to sky.com/news announced today are just the first phase of a plan to bring the same sense of ambition Sky News has brought to television, to the web," said Andrew Hawken, SKy's online editorial director.

“Our intention is – incrementally - to create a richer site for breaking news and information that will encourage users to find out more about what is going on in the world.”

However, the new site was difficult to access for a period of time this morning.

A note on the website read: "A communication error occurred: The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time."

Sky confirmed that there had been a minor technical glitch which was resolved quickly.
