Television personality and green campaigner Dick Strawbridge has said that we don't have to give up our modern lifestyle to be environmentally friendly.
Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Housing's South West Conference in Torquay, Strawbridge told delegates that "you don't have to wear hemp shirts, socks and knickers to live a sustainable lifestyle in the 21st century."
He emphasised the fact that we didn't need to give up broadband, laptops, or other gadgets.
"We just need to adapt our homes and lifestyles using a simple cocktail of sustainable solutions to help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint - using low energy life bulbs, ensuring our homes are well insulated, buying locally produced food, using water butts and composting our organic waste."
Strawbridge warned against the dangers of preaching to the public, arguing that it was better to create awareness of the dangers the Earth's fragile ecology faces rather than telling them to give up things they have been accustomed to.
"We must not preach about carbon emissions, we need to create more public awareness. We will know when we have succeeded when green issues don't dominate the news anymore but become part of our mind set and lifestyle decisions."
