Sky has hailed the success of its recent advertising campaign, after seeing the total number of its broadband customers double in the last three months.

According to Sky, it now has 553,000 active Sky Broadband customers and its network reaches more than over 60 per cent of UK homes.

It also claims that customers are on average downloading at almost twice the speed they had with their previous supplier and two thirds are using wireless for the first time.

"Sky Broadband has gone from zero to half a million customers in just nine months," said Brian Sullivan, managing director of Sky's Customer Group. "Customers are switching to Sky for quality and to put money back in their pockets."

However, Sky admits that at least 7 per cent of its new broadband customers - about 2,000 people - have to wait more than 15 days before they can start enjoying the service.

Steve Weller at price comparison service uSwitch said: "In addition to maintaining its marketing might in the battle against Virgin Media, it appears that there are some internal problems that Sky needs to address."

"Sky claims that 90 per cent of new broadband customers are connected within 15 days, yet with 20,000 new broadband connections every week this leaves two thousand customers having to wait more than 15 days for their service."

But a Sky spokeswoman said: “Sky connected a broadband customer every 30 seconds in the last quarter and our average connection times are among the best in the industry."

"Unlike some other providers, we’re hooking customers up to our own network straight away so they can benefit from faster downloads and lower prices. We’re never complacent and we’ll always work to make the switching process as quick and efficient as possible.”
