Next Friday employers nationwide will be encouraged to allow their staff to work from home as part of Work Wise UK's National Work from Home Day.
Work Wise UK is an initiative supported by the Trade Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry that encourages the widespread adoption of new smarter working practices, such as home working, across the UK.
The initiative aims to spread the word to employers that technologies such as broadband can enable many workers to get on with their jobs just as effectively at home as they would in the office.
"Broadband has completely revolutionised the way I work. I am now able to operate from literally anywhere in the world. I always knew that broadband would bring benefits to the business, but did not initially realise the extent and the way in which it would radically alter my way of working." said Peter Phelan, proprietor of ProPhoto, a Cornwall-based photography firm.
Work Wise UK also emphasised the other benefits of allowing employees to work from home, such as reduced congestion on the roads which can affect not only the productivity of workers but the environment as well.
