The online technology industry is perceived as being less environmentally-friendly than the energy and automotive industries, according to a survey.

Google ranked 19th in the companies list, behind brands such as BP, Toyota and Shell. The travel industry was the only market seen to be less green than the online technology industry.

Though internet companies aren't necessarily big polluters, it seems that placing more emphasis on their environmental policies wouldn't do their public image any harm.

Geoff Beattie of Cohn & Wolfe, one of the companies involved in the research, said: “The fact that Toyota, BP, Shell, Virgin Atlantic and five major retailers made the top twenty of the UK’s ‘greenest’ brands shows that industries with large energy needs can enhance their reputation if they take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.”

More then 1,500 adults in the UK were asked to name the companies and industries that they thought had the best and worst green credentials. The research was part of the 2007 ImagePower Green Brands Survey.
