An effort to create a massive archive of British email is just two weeks from completion, with some 13,807 emails received so far.
Three per cent of the emails already classified were placed in the 'life-changing' category, with nine per cent relating to love and romance.
Microsoft has been running a campaign throughout the month of May to get people to contribute to the archive. Once completed, the collection will be stored at the British Library.
"We want to preserve a slice of email history by recording the best of email to date," said Jo Wickremasinghe at Windows Live Hotmail.
The campaign was timed to coincide with the relaunch of Hotmail as Windows Live Hotmail. Hotmail was one of the original web-based email services and at the end of last year celebrated its 10th birthday.
