The chairman of Dixons Stores Group, owners of PC World, Currys and Dixons, has called for the stand-by function on electrical products to be phased out.

John Clare made the comment at a meeting of DSG's suppliers and partners earlier this week, and called on all manufacturers of consumer electronics equipment to support the international green agenda.

"We must work together to offer more energy-efficient products, phase out, where possible, the stand-by function on electrical products, provide energy efficiency information to users, including energy efficient labelling for brown goods," Clare told suppliers.

Clare's speech came on the same day as the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI), a scheme involving Intel, Google, Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft and the World Wildlife Fund, was announced.

The initiative intends to certify computers that meet certain environmental standards, so businesses and consumers can be sure that they are buying energy-efficient and green products.

"Computers have helped us make huge strides toward a more efficient world today, with reduced travel, more productivity, online transactions and more," Pat Gelsinger of Intel said.

The CSCI aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 54 million tons per year.
