More than 10 million people watched Saturday's Live Earth concerts online, according to MSN.

MSN, which streamed all nine gigs live online through its Live Earth portal, said that there were more people watching simultaneously than any other online concert to date.

"The 10 million streams MSN has delivered represent a milestone in live internet broadcasting," said Joanne Bradford, corporate vice president and chief media officer at MSN.

More people are expected to return to the site to watch recordings of their favourite bands and artists even though the event is over.

"We expect to see an even greater number of streams after the concerts are over as people return to watch their favourite performances or enjoy them for the first time if they missed the concerts live," said Bradford.

Nine concerts took place in seven different continents and artists performing included Madonna, The Police and Genesis.

The event, which was organised by several environmental groups and supported by former US vice president Al Gore, aimed to spread a green message and highlight the dangers of global warming.

"By providing the opportunity to view the shows in their entirety online we're able to communicate this message on a mass-scale in a way that engages people and inspires them to act," said Kevin Wall, founder and producer of Live Earth.
