The Office Of National Statistics has released the latest figures for internet connectivity in the UK.
The Office Of National Statistics (ONS) has released the latest figures for internet connectivity in the UK.
However, it has received stinging criticism from T-Mobile for neglecting the mobile broadband market.
The statistics released show that nearly nine out of 10 connections to the internet are via broadband. Just 13.9 per cent of connections are dial-up, down from 16.4 per cent in March 2007, according to the figures.
But T-Mobile thinks the ONS is missing a trick by ignoring the mobile internet, which it says is soaring in popularity.
Richard Warmsley of T-Mobile said: "It’s sill true that most people connect to the internet via a fixed-line at home or work, but internet on mobiles has come of age and we’re seeing massive growth.
"We’re now seeing customers use this to feed their social network addiction - it’s more important than ever to have an 'always there, always on' connection to the web," he said.
T-Mobile said that the UK was at the forefront of the mobile internet revolution and the government should be promoting it more.
"This is an exciting time for mobile and next generation internet services - the UK has a sophisticated mobile market and has amongst the highest broadband surfers and shoppers on the planet, with world-beating creative industries. We are ideally placed to take advantage of this emerging trend, which is something the government should be promoting," said Warmsley.
Another mobile operator, 3, yesterday announced the pricing for its new mobile internet service, which is due to launch on 3 September.
