New Radiohead album unpriced

Radiohead are letting buyers decide how much they want to pay for their new album.

You can decide how much you pay for In Rainbows

Radiohead have announced the release of their seventh album, In Rainbows, and are letting the customer decide how much they will pay.

On 10 October, the album will be available to download from a website. You'll need to place your order to get a download code, which will be sent to you on the day.

You can get the album as a discbox or a digital download. The discbox costs £40 and will be sent out in early December. It includes two CDs or 12in LPs with digital photographs and artwork.

If you buy the discbox you will be entitled to download the album as well.

If you just want to get the downloadable version, there's a novel twist – you can decide how much you pay. The price field in the order form has been left blank, leaving you to decide how much you're prepared to shell out.

Analyst David Card from Jupiter Research said that it was unlikely that other artists would follow Radiohead's lead.

"Radiohead are in a unique position: they're a band with a fairly big fan base, they currently don't have a label contract, and they haven't released anything since 2003 (so they just might need to do something dramatic). Even if this scheme makes them some money, it's not an easy recipe to copy."
