What digital switch means to you

If you're not sure when your area is going through the digital switchover or what services you will receive, a new postcode checker can help.

By inputting your postcode, you can find out when the digital switch will take place in your area

The body in charge of the digital switch has launched a new online postcode checker to show when each area of the UK will only be able to receive digital TV signals and what services will be available.

The Digital UK website can tell you when you will need to have upgraded your equipment by and what new services you will receive once the switchover is complete.

Figures from Ofcom suggest that only one in six people in the UK know when their area will make the switch.

The switch will begin in Whitehaven, Cumbria, in just over two weeks, but some areas in the UK won't lose analogue TV broadcasts until 2012.

Ford Ennals, Chief Executive of Digital UK, said: "Public awareness and understanding about the switchover is generally good but we do want to make sure people know what it entails and when it is coming to their area.

"Thanks to the Postcode Checker we can now provide everyone in the UK with a personalised switchover information service," continued Ennals.

The website will also tell you the location of the transmitter you will be receiving your digital signal from and give you an indication of the kind of signal strength you will get now, and how good it is expected to be at the time of the switch.
