MyFootballClub buys Ebbsfleet

A website set up with the ambition of purchasing a football club has announced that it has agreed in principle to buy Ebbsfleet United FC.

Before it chose a target, MyFootballClub.co.uk invited the general public to join up for £35, for which members would own a share in the newly-purchased team.

It also invited members to vote for which club they would most like to buy - Leeds United was one of the early favourites, though this was ruled out by the people behind the website.

Will Brooks of MyFootballClub said: "Nine football clubs approached MyFootballClub and we believe that Ebbsfleet United is the perfect choice. We hope that MyFootballClub members and Ebbsfleet United supporters will join forces and make the football club more sustainable and successful."

Brooks came up with the idea with his brother Tom, both Fulham fans, back in the days when crowds at Craven Cottage were counted in hundreds rather than thousands.

"Some time ago when our team was struggling he mused upon the idea that if the crowd put their hands in pockets the club could raise considerable revenues. This was about 12 years ago and since then the internet has come along to make a campaign like ours possible," Tom Brooks told Web User recently.

Manager Liam Daish, whose role will be changed to that of head coach, will have funds made available during the January transfer window to help the club push towards promotion to the Football League.

Daish said: "Everyone has worked wonders to get this club to in the top half of the Conference. We all agree the club needs something extra to take it to the next step.

"As a football fan, I think the MyFootballClub idea is fantastic. And as the coach, I look forward to the challenge of working with thousands of members to produce a winning team," he continued.

Ebbsfleet United used to be known as Gravesend and Northfleet, and is located in north-west Kent.

Jessica McQueen, chair of the Ebbsfleet United Supporters Trust said: "Also being a Trust, our members understand the MyFootballClub concept immediately. We very much look forward to working with the MyFootbcallClub members for the benefit Ebbsfleet United."
