Wii beats iPhone in search stakes

There were twice as many searches for the Nintendo Wii as there were for Apple's iPhone during the month of November.

There have been more web searches related to Nintendo products than Apple products in the run-up to Christmas, according to statistics.

Web monitoring company Hitwise found that the Wii was the most searched-for product last month in the UK, followed by the Nintendo DS.

The iPhone was number six on the list, failing to beat the perennial children's favourite Lego. The iPod was seventh and the Xbox 360 10th.

Robin Goad, director of research at Hitwise said: "The Nintendo Wii is hugely popular this year, accounting for six in every ten searches for a games console.

"The popularity of the Wii and the Nintendo DS mean that there were more searches for Nintendo products in November than Apple products. This is despite the significant increases in searches for both the iPod and the iPhone, which is currently the most searched for mobile phone in the UK," Goad continued.

The Wii's popularity in the search stakes isn't surprising - there is a national Wii shortage and websites such as wii-consoles.co.uk have sprung up, hoping to cash in on people's desperation to get their hands on one before Christmas day.
