Brits dump lovers online

Paul Simon can add three more to his list of 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover: text, email and Facebook.

The deal is based on a valuation that estimates Facebook's worth as $15bn

Fifteen per cent of people questioned in a survey have been dumped by text message or an email.

Following an example set by Britney Spears when she ended her relationship with Kevin Federline by text message in December 2006, and Phil Collins' conducting some of his divorce by fax, it seems that new technology has made it easier to take the coward's way out.

The survey, conducted by moneysupermarket.com, did throw up some other surprises, though - apparently a quarter of people aged 18 to 24 would write a letter by hand to end a relationship.

Rob Barnes, head of mobiles and broadband at moneysupermarket.com, said: "We are starting to see a shift in the way Brits end relationships. Most of us send emails and texts everyday, so it comes as no surprise they are now being used to ditch someone – however distasteful this is."

And it's not just text messages and emails people are using to dump partners - it's Facebook and similar sites as well.

"The results show one per cent of the population would use a social networking site to dump a partner. It would be interesting to see how this changes as sites such as Facebook and MySpace become more apparent in our everyday lives," said Barnes.
