Thousands of football fans have called on the Prime Minister to force the Football League to reverse its decision to dock 15 points from Leeds United this season.

The Yorkshire club was given the points deduction at the start of the season after the club went into administration. It has issued a High Court challenge to the penalty.

According to the Football League, the penalty was necessary because Leeds United contravened its rules on insolvency, but Leeds claim the punishment was unfair and unreasonable.

More than 19,000 fans have signed an online petition at the Downing Street e-petition website, which states: "We, the undersigned, petition the Prime Minister to request that the Football League remove the 15-point deduction from Leeds United AFC."

"If the deduction occurs, the team wont be able to strengthen its side with the quality of player it so requires. I believe this move by the Football League to be unjust and unfair."

According to the official Leeds United website, it has received support from fans all around the country and is "asking all football supporters, with the interests of the game at heart, to take time out to sign the petition to the PM."

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates said: "The support is very encouraging. People are beginning to realise that this isn't about Leeds United and that 'it could be us next.'

"This isn't about Leeds United - it's about justice and fair play. We're hoping all fair-minded fans of whichever club they support will sign up. Every one helps because this is a matter of principle."
