Google is UK's top-ranked brand

Google and Microsoft are the companies perceived as having the best reputation in the UK, despite both being US-based concerns.

Google and Microsoft have overtaken established UK brands such as BP and BBC Worldwide in the annual Superbrands rankings.

The rankings, which are based on feedback from a council of senior business leaders in the UK and a survey of 1,500 professionals, rate companies on their reputations for quality, reliability and distinction within their market sector.

Google beat Microsoft to the top spot, with the rest of the top ten largely consisting of British companies such as BP and British Airways, and brands with strong UK links such as GlaxoSmithKline and Rolls-Royce.

"British business opts for what it knows and trusts and as we head towards economic slowdown this is only going to become more important. The next year will put even the strongest brands to the test as they defend their organisations from the challenges that await," Stephen Cheliotis, chair of the Superbrands Council.

Last year, the BBC came top of the list, with Microsoft, British Airways, BT and Google completing the top five.
