A third flout mobile car ban

A third of drivers are still using their mobiles while on the road, one year after a law was passed to ban the practice.

Many motorists are still using their mobile phones while driving despite the fact that it is now illegal.

Four out of five people questioned in a survey said that they were confused by the legislation, which was passed one year ago, and bans the use of any device that prevents you from being in full control of your vehicle.

The research by Bluetooth device firm Parrot found that a third of people still use their mobile on the road and of these, 38 per cent openly admitted not using a hands-free kit.

The government launched an awareness campaign when the law was changed, informing drivers that they could get a fine of £60 and three points on their licence if caught.

Chris Roberts of Parrot said: "The law clearly states that you must be in control of your vehicle at all times. In 2007 77,000 fines were issued, which translates to a staggering £2.3 million in fines and untold points added to licences."
