Work together with Google Sites

Creating a collaborative website should be made easier with the introduction of Google Sites to the Google Apps platform.

Google Sites

Google has added an application to the Google Apps platform that should make it easier for teams to create websites that can be collaboratively edited and updated. Google Sites is a 'wiki' application where editing rights can be shared among a group of people. Google has previously offered services that allow collaborative editing of text documents and spreadsheets with Google Docs, but Google Sites lets a group create an entire website. You don't need complicated programming knowledge or web design skills to create a site, according to Google. It is intended to help schools, businesses and other organisations create sites that can be seen by the world or limited to small groups. "Creating a team website has always been too complicated, requiring dedicated hardware and software as well as programming skills. Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customised site in minutes and invite others to contribute," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise at Google. You will be able to embed content from other Google services such as YouTube, Picasa, Google Docs and Google Calendar, and you can upload files of any type, according to the company. To create a website for your team, you need to sign up for Google Apps, which can be done at http://sites.google.com. You will be asked to verify your email address and then you are free to invite others to join. Signing up to the standard edition of Google Apps is free though there is a Premier Edition which costs $50 (about £25) per user, per year and offers more storage capacity. The Google Sites interface is currently only available in English but you can add content in any language you wish. http://sites.google.com
