England took on Ireland at Twickenham after a below-par performance at Murrayfield against the Scots in their previous match.

Ireland had a makeshift backline with Andrew Trimble and Shane Horgan playing at centre instead of the injured Brian O'Driscoll and Gordon D'Arcy.

Scotland and Italy were fighting over the wooden spoon, with the Scots eager to build on their victory over England and Italy keen to avoid another winless tournament.
