Google Video gets a makeover

Since Google acquired YouTube, Google Video has slipped out of the limelight. However, a new look for the video search engine may change that.

Google has made several changes to its video search engine

Google has given the Google Video service a new look, improving the search functionality.

Now you can search for videos in three different ways - using a list view, a grid view, or a TV view, where you can continue watching a video while searching through others.

The Google Video homepage has also been revamped.

"We wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to find and access the web's most compelling videos and, just as before, you can see what videos people are viewing, sharing, and blogging about," said Greg Billock of Google.

There is also a timeline view so you can see which videos were popular and when.

However, analyst Bobby Tulsiani of Jupiter Research said that the new-look Google Video seemed to be based closely on a competitor's product.

"If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the team at MSN Video should be blushing. The ability to watch a video and simultaneously search was a big part of the MSN Video redesign last year," he said.

Google Video has taken a back seat since Google acquired YouTube back in October 2006 for £880m.
