AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 is the latest version of the popular free anti-virus tool.
Andy Shaw, Technical & Reviews Editor at Web User, takes a first look.
The latest version of AVG Anti-Virus Free has rolled the old Test Center and Control Center into one, so now you do all your configuring and scanning from the same place – a great improvement in clarity and ease of use.
Also, anti-spyware scanning has been integrated directly, so you can use this single program to scan your computer for even more types of net nasties. The downside to this is that AVG's free standalone Anti-Spyware and Anti-Rootkit software is being discontinued.
The interface for AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 has been brought up to date, so it now looks slick and modern. The software also includes a useful Search-Shield, which integrates with Internet Explorer and Firefox.
When you perform a search in Google, Yahoo or Microsoft's Live Search, the program will scan the resulting links and warn you if any look to contain potential malware.
All in all, it's a great update of an old Web User favourite and comes highly recommended.

Look out for Issue 187 of Web User, on sale Thursday 8 May, which will feature a practical guide to using AVG 8.0.
