Mayoral race goes online


If visits to websites were votes, Boris Johnson would be the new Mayor of London.


Boris Johnson's website has received more hits than rivals in recent weeks

The candidates for the position of London's Mayor are fighting it out on another battleground - the web.

Boris Johnson's site was the most popular yesterday, followed by the incumbent Mayor Ken Livingstone, and then the site of Brian Paddick, according to figures from web monitor Hitwise.

Johnson has been consistently on top in the fight for web traffic in the last few weeks, with Livingstone and Paddick locked in a tight battle for second place in terms of hits.

However, Paddick is getting the most traffic coming directly from social networks such as Facebook, suggesting that the ex-policeman is using these sites to co-ordinate his web campaign.

Meanwhile, an online political battle of another kind has been taking place in the US.

The websites of Democrat rivals for the Presidential candidacy, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, were hacked recently according to security firm Trend Micro.

The company said there was no malware involved - the sites were simply redirecting the visitor to its rival site.
