VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) provider Trupone has launched a service enabling customers to make mobile phone calls over the web, even when they're not online.
The new service, called Truphone Anywhere, will give mobile phone users a big boost by reducing the high costs of calling abroad, the company says.
Truphone Anywhere works by automatically sending the long distance part of a call over the internet through a Truphone server, thereby significantly reducing the total cost of the call, according to the company.
The service can currently only be accessed by some Nokia phones, and the company plans to add handsets from other manufacturers.
To download Truphone just enter your mobile number on the Truphone website to receive a text with the software necessary to download.
James Tagg, Truphone's chief executive officer, said: "The days of having to pay through the nose to make international calls are no longer just numbered, they are gone; international calls from mobile phones are easier and more affordable than ever.
According to the company a 10 minute call from the UK to an Australian landline would cost £5.00 with Orange Pay Monthly, where as with Truphone Anywhere the same call costs £0.30.
Rival VoIP provider Jajah also offers a service that allows you to make calls that are routed over the web from any mobile or landline phone to any other phone.
Jajah Direct was launched in November 2007 and the company claims that it will enable you to make savings of up to 95 per cent on your calls.
