More than a million surfers have pledged to download Firefox 3, the latest version of the browser, when it is released this month.

Mozilla is hoping to set a new world record during Download Day for the most software downloads in 24 hours and thus ensuring its place in history as well as the Guinness Book of World Records.

In Europe, Poland leads the way with over 75,000 surfers pledging to download the newest version of the browser.

France is second (53,849) followed by Italy (44,464), Germany (41,498) and then the UK (40,369).

The US leads the way globally with most pledges, closing in on 170,000. Although no release date has been set it is widely expect that Mozilla will release Firefox 3 sometime around mid-June.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 3 contains 14,000 improvements including more than 5,000 add-ons to enable customised browsing.

The second Release Candidate of Firefox 3 was made available at the beginning of June and is still in testing.
