Andy Murray is through to his first ever grand slam semi-final where he will face world number one Rafael Nadal in the US Open.

Murray overcame Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in four sets 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 7-5 to reach the US Open semi-finals.

Now Murray, 21, faces the toughest test of his career as he meets Nadal in the 'Super Saturday' showdown.

The match is a repeat of this year's Wimbledon quarter-final where the 22-year-old Spaniard easily disposed of Murray.

Nadal will be looking to seal his ninth title of the season. Currently he is the reigning Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion.

Despite losing the opening set, Nadal sunk American Mardy Fish in four sets to reach the semis at Flushing Meadows.

In the women's singles reigning Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was dumped out of the Open by her younger sister Serena . The sisters have had 17 competitive encounters and Serena has now clinched 10 of them.

The women's semi-finals will be played tomorrow. Dinara Safina of Russia, seeded sixth, will face fourth seed Serena Williams in the first match.

Fifth seed and Olympic champion Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic, the second seed from Serbia, meet in the other semi-final.
