Google fixes Gmail spam spike

Google has said it has fixed a classification problem which resulted in an increase in spam clogging its email service.

Google has said it has addressed the problem of a recent spike in spam clogging Google Mail, its email service.

The increase in spam messages to Gmail and Google Mail accounts was flagged by members of one of Google's official discussion groups. The spike is the second in as many months.

Posters on the forum group noted that from mid-September a considerable amount of spam was making its way to Inboxes.

"I am noting the same problem; started about 11PM yesterday 9/16. Hundreds of spam messages making it through to the inbox," wrote one poster.

Another poster complained that emails advertising 'Soft Cialis, Soft Viagra and Generik Viagra' were flooding his Inbox.

The complaints were picked up by a Google employee. She said that the Gmail team tracked the problem to its classification system and has since addressed the problem.

She asked Google Mail users to contact the team if the majority of spam messages were making their way to users' Inboxes instead of to the spam folder.
