O2 tops broadband speed test

O2 has come out top in recent broadband speed tests conducted by Moneysupermarket.

O2's new tariffs are subject to a fair usage policy

O2 has come out top in a broadband speed test conducted by price-comparison site Moneysupermarket.com.

With an average speed of 4.95Mbps in the tests, O2 came out on top, followed by Sky and Orange with average speeds of 3.63Mbps and 3Mbps respectively.

Moneysupermarket.com conducted 60,000 speed tests in order to produce its figures, which unsurprisingly show that ISPs with their own unbundled networks have the best speeds.

Rob Barnes, head of broadband at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Our tests have shown O2 is not just an overnight success – it’s establishing itself as one of the best broadband providers on the market.

Orange has today announced new broadband packages and an overhaul of its customer service division after coming out badly in recent satisfaction surveys.

"With Orange also pushing its way into the top three, mobile networks are dominating the 8Mbps market at the moment, although whether Orange can maintain consistency remains to be seen."

However, Barnes said that the UK's broadband network was still behind that of its European neighbours.

"One thing the results do show is broadband in Britain is still way off the pace. The European Commission has called on the telecoms companies to share access to their superfast networks, however with profits at risk this looks very unlikely."
