Mozilla launches Geode add-on

Mozilla, maker of Firefox, has announced the launch of a new geolocation add-on for the browser.

Geode

An add-on for the Firefox browser will let you work out your precise location when you are out and about, helping you find places of interest nearby.

Geode is a tool intended to help people get information about local bars and cafes in unfamiliar locations so they can explore their surroundings.

Wi-Fi surfers can find their location on a map by using the feature in Firefox that uses technology from a company called Skyhook to map Wi-Fi signals in the surrounding area.

"Geode works both inside and outside with an accuracy of between 10 to 20 metres, normally within a second," claimed Mozilla.

The tool will let website developers offer all sorts of services using the precise location information provided by Geode, the company said.

You can download the add-on and try it out with a Food Finder demo which claims to show cafes and restaurants within walking distance.

However, initial tests didn't find much information for the area of London Web User is located in, though it located our Wi-Fi signal very accurately.
