Sky to launch online TV service

Sky has announced plans to launch an online TV service that lets viewers watch Sky Sports on the web.

Online TV

Sky is to launch a new online subscription service that lets people watch its range of channels including Sky Sports via the internet for the first time.

The new service is expected to be launched in the "next few months", according to Mike Darcey, BSkyB's chief operating officer.

The internet TV package will be open to all consumers, not just those currently signed up to Sky TV and broadband. The online channels will be made available through the SkyPlayer website.

Darcey confirmed that Sky would offer its sports channels on the subscription service but other content such as Sky1 programmes and movies have not yet been confirmed.

With most broadcasters offering playback websites for viewers to catch up on content, watching TV online has become increasingly popular.

Darcey said the technology was now good enough to launch a broadband service, but he did admit the service is not great for everyone.

No exact dates or details of the subscription service have been announced, but Web User will bring you them in time.
