Virus hits hospital systems

A virus has attacked the computer systems of three London hospitals, it has been reported.

Barts in the City, the Royal London Hospital and The London Chest Hospital are the three hospitals affected.

However, the NHS moved to reassure the public and patients that the attack was being dealt with and that no one was in any danger.

"A computer virus has infected the Barts and The London computer system," a statement from Barts and The London Foundation Trust said.

"The Trust’s well-rehearsed emergency procedures have been activated to ensure that key clinical systems continue safely while the system is being stabilised and a solution is being found," the statement continued.

Richard Hales of security firm criticised the NHS for the seeming lack of preventative measures in place to stop virus attacks.

"It’s unbelievable that in the 21st Century a simple computer virus can cause havoc in the public sector. Anti-virus software exists to stop exactly this sort of attack, but it’s clear this NHS trust does not have adequate security protection," said Hales.

"An urgent review of the security policy is needed because if they are leaving themselves open to a simple computer virus, it could just be the tip of the iceberg," he continued.
