England travelled to Berlin to face Germany in an international friendly last night.

The two sides resembled B-teams rather than first-choice sides, with England missing Wayne Rooney, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Theo Walcott and Ashley Cole.

Fringe players such as Michael Carrick, Sean Wright-Phillips and Jermaine Defoe all got a starting place.

Germany were depleted too, taking to the field without Michael Ballack, Philip Lahm and Torsten Frings, with ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann also left out.
