Mumbai attacks lead to web frenzy

Bloggers and Twitters have been updating the world on the terrorist attacks that have killed over 100 people in Mumbai.

The web has responded quickly to the terrorist attacks that have killed over 100 people in Mumbai.

Updates from news correspondents, surfers, bloggers and eyewitnesses in Mumbai have kept people informed about the bombings.

Reuters news agency report that within five seconds of 0748 GMT last night, 80 messages about the Mumbai attacks were posted on Twitter. Posts included offers of help for the media and updates on the situation.

Many of the live Twitter updates now are calling on India's broadcasters to stop showing live feeds from the locations of the two hotels that terrorists stormed yesterday.

India's NDTV is broadcasting live pictures of commandos taking position outside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, where terrorists are still holed up.

Bloggers in Mumbai have been updating blogs through the night with live feeds and posting photos to Flickr.

Blogs like Mumbai Help are working with the emergency services to provide information of hospitals as well as help lines.

CNN's citizen reporter website iReport is being updated with feeds, links, images and videos from citizens in Mumbai.

There are live text updates of developments in Mumbai at
BBC.co.uk.

Indian commandos are preparing a final assault on the Nairman House, where the Hasidic Jewish movement Chabad is headquartered. News reports say a rabbi, his wife and other civilians are being held hostage.

According to Indian broadcaster IBNLive.com, which you can watch live on the internet, terrorists stormed the hotels and were specifically looking for American and British passport holders.

IBNLive.com said that shops, schools and businesses have been shut down across the city.

It is believed that the terrorists reached Mumbai by boat before storming locations frequented by foreigners. A previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks but now speculation is turning to Pakistani involvement.
