Shoppers are turning their backs on the high street in favour of internet bargains, according to the latest figures.
Despite the deepening economic woes online sales were up 16 per cent in November with internet shoppers buying everything from clothes to alcohol.
Spending on beer, wine and spirits was up 52 per cent in November compared with October, with shoppers stocking up early for Christmas, according to IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group), the industry body for online retailers.
The sharp rise in internet sales in November was driven by online retailers matching aggressive discounting of high-street stores; last month Marks and Spencer held a one-off sales day in its stores as well as online.

IMRG chief executive James Roper said: "While we would naturally expect to see a monthly increase in online sales during this time of the year, it is perhaps surprising that we are continuing to see yearly growth during these otherwise difficult times for retailers.
Amazon finally launched its MP3 music store in the UK at the beginning of this month selling tracks from 59p and albums from £3.
Online shoppers are reminded to check final Christmas delivery dates to make sure orders arrive ahead of Christmas Day.
