The BBC has created a version of the iPlayer that lets you download programmes onto Mac and Linux-based PCs.

iPlayer 2.0

The BBC has created a version of the iPlayer, it's online catch-up service, for both Mac and Linux computers.

While the two operating systems were able to stream content on the iPlayer, the new version lets you download programmes to watch at a later date.

The iPlayer allows viewers to stream radio and TV programmes shown on the BBC for up to seven days after broadcast or download and watch them for up to 30 days.

Known as the BBC iPlayer Desktop, the new version was created by the BBC, working alongside software company Adobe.

The BBC also carried out tests which it said could help ISPs cope the with the increase in web traffic generated by the iPlayer.

Over 250 million programmes have been watched, listened to or downloaded since the iPlayer was officially launched on Chrsitams day 2007. Windows-based PC users form the biggest core of the iPlayer audience with an 85 per cent share.
