Facebook 'bigger than Japan'

There are now more Facebook members than there are people in Nigeria, Russia or Japan.

The deal is based on a valuation that estimates Facebook's worth as $15bn

The rise of social-networking websites shows no sign of abating with Facebook, the world's most popular, passing the 150 million milestone yesterday.

According to a message posted on the Facebook blog by founder Mark Zuckerberg, the social-networking site is now used actively by 150 million people, with almost half logging on every day.

"If Facebook were a country, it would be the eighth most-populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria," said Zuckerberg.

Facebook was launched in a Harvard University dormitory in 2004 and was initially created for students.

"Today, people of all ages - grandparents, parents and children - use Facebook in more than 35 different languages and in 170 countries and territories," Zuckerburg wrote on the blog.

According to Facebook, there are more than 700 million photos uploaded to the site each month. The average user has 100 friends on the site and 2.6 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day.
