BT launches free public Wi-Fi scheme

A new scheme that lets businesses offer free, public-access hotspots to visitors has been launched by BT.

BT Business customers can now offer visitors free Wi-Fi by updating the firmware of their BT Business Total Broadband hub.

The new capabilities will let visitors to a business' premises use the Wi-Fi hotspot for free though, if the business wishes, it can charge for access too.

According to BT, the free customer access is never given priority over business traffic, meaning that it shouldn't have a detrimental affect on connection speeds for essential work.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business said: "Offering Wi-Fi adds value and is good customer service. It can also allow businesses to make incremental revenue."

Last week, BT announced the launched of a service that offers free access to listings information in the London area to all surfers.
