Opera has announced that it will unveil a super-fast browser that runs on PCs and mobile devices at a trade show next week. Mobile World Congress (MWC) takes place in Barcelona from 16-19 February and will see the launch of Opera Turbo. Opera said that the new browser compresses data sent to a PC or mobile device by up to 80 per cent, making page-loading times much faster. This compression technology means that "even devices with limited hardware capabilities show improved page download rates and better overall performance," according to Opera. "We are living in a time and place where access to the web should be a universal right to all," said Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera Software. "Technology has advanced us to the point that we can very nearly access the internet anytime and anywhere from a growing number of devices," he continued. Opera currently has a share of less than one per cent of the desktop browser market, though the company claims that 20 million people use its mobile browser, Opera Mini, every month. www.opera.com
