95% of web connections now broadband

More than 95 per cent of all web connections in the UK are broadband, according to official statistics.

Broadband

More than 19 out of 20 internet connections in the UK are on broadband lines, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Broadband accounts for 95.1 per cent of all internet connections in the UK, up from 94.1 per cent in September 2008.

However, there are still some areas in the UK where broadband services are not available, which goes some way to explain why 4.9 per cent of internet connections in the UK use dial-up technology.

Recently the Country, Land and Business Association (CLA) appealed for help from surfers in the UK to construct a map of broadband blackspots.

The CLA is pushing the government and BT to roll out a network that would let anyone in the UK access broadband services.

Mobile broadband services could be crucial to providing high-speed services to those in the UK out of the reach of the wired telephone network and industry regulator Ofcom recently announced that it would open up more of the mobile spectrum to these services.
